Total of flexible column at the top of the column

I have a column which is not fixed. I will enter numbers later in cells a10, a11, a12 etc. I want to find the total of all cells in column A, so I wrote in cell D1=sum(a:a)

My question, if I want to put this total =sum(A:A) in the first cell A1, how can I do that? Thank you very much.

Hi Lezawang,

You can't do that because Excel will see it as a circular reference when the formula in A1 tries to SUM itself. You can use row references such as in A1 put =SUM($A$2:$A$9999) where 9999 is the highest row you might have data.
