i have a list of items in column A and a list of numbers in column B. the item names repeat. i need a formula that will seek out and add up the numbers for the corresponding item names.

Excel Facts

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying

=SUMIF(A-range,Item,B-range)

would also work.

When SUMIF can do the required computation, SUMPRODUCT is unnecessary. Moreover, the former computes faster and costs less.
