Hello All,

I have a database with a 2 positions code: one letter and one number. Each code has a description in other column of the database.

I have another database with the same two position code in one column but no code description.

There are some codes in the 2nd database that are not in the 1st database.

I would like to add a column with the Code Description to the second database. Using vlookup does not work for me!

Can somebody help?

Thanks!

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
Either VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH should work for you.

In the first sheet in which columns are the codes and descriptions?

Are the codes sorted in ascending order, or can they be?

This is a sample of the codes:

AC, AD, AE, AF, BE, BP, CA, D1, D2, EX, EY, EZ, F4, F6

There are about 200 0f them. They are in the firsr column in both databases. The description is in the 2nd column in the first database. I think thye are not really "sortable".

Thanks!

Have you tried VLOOKUP?

Assuming the first "database" is sheet1

then in your 2nd "database", assuming your codes are in column A and descriptions need to be in column B then in B1

=VLOOKUP(A1,sheet1!$A$1:$B$200,2,0)
