i am using this code
=IF(P6<>"",TRIM(LEFT(B34,LEN(B34)-SEARCH(" ",B34)-1)),"")

the space is between the names ex) jon smith
however sometimes on certan names it will only show jo or jonsm

any ideas

Your result will depend on if your text has a leading or training space or even if there are two spaces between your two names.
What results are you after? Just First name?

So do you just want to avoid the possibility of returning an error value? If so use Peter's formula as modified:

=IF(P6<>"",TRIM(LEFT(B34&" ",SEARCH(" ",B34))),"")
