I'm using a formula in conditional formatting that is longer than the display window. When I try to edit the end of the formula I can't get to it - using the cursor keys just inserts cell references.

The window won't expand and using the end key just moved the main screen.

Is there a way to do this without retyping it from scratch each time?

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
select the formula with the mouse from right to left. this will get you to the start of the formula, you should then be able to put the cursor where you want to edit.

both excellent solutions...

In particular F2! I've been using excel for 20 years and i can't believe i didn't know that. I feel both ignorant and elated at the same time.

I think i'll go and find an F-key tutorial.

Thanks guys.
