Trouble Opening Workbooks

I recently started having trouble opening workbooks. If I double click an Excel file to open it, file opens but it does not show the cells. The Excel toolbars show up fine, but I can see my desktop where I should see the cells of the worksheet. If I open excel first I don't have the problem. Or, if I change the view to "Full Screen" the cells will appear. This problem started when I used QuatroPro to save an old QuatroPro workbook to Excel Format, but now it is happening on all excel files. I have no idea what could be causing the cells to not appear or how to fix it. There are no macros in the background that might be causing the problem. Please help.
