Hello, I have followed a tutorial located at: http://www.contextures.com/xladvfilter02.html#TopFive

I have Excel 2007 and Win7

What I'm attempting to do is is take sheet1 with 100's of rows of data and about 20 different columns where most rows contain a zip code. I would like to use an advanced filter to extract rows where the data contains about 8 different zip codes I've chosen and place them in sheet2. I would also like to choose the headings/columns I want in sheet 2 as well as I dont need to see all columns from Sheet1. What I've been able to do so far is get 1 zip code extracted but my attempts to extract more than 1 zip code is not working! Here is a sample of what I've got so far:

Sheet 1 Data:
<TABLE style="WIDTH: 144pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=192><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" span=3 width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl63>RESI</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The Criteria Range I'm using on sheet one is blank at D1 and on D2 has the formula: =ISNUMBER(FIND("78717",A2))

This produces the successful result in Sheet 2:
<TABLE style="WIDTH: 96pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=128><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" span=2 width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #f0f0f0; BORDER-LEFT: #f0f0f0; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; WIDTH: 48pt; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: #f0f0f0; BORDER-RIGHT: #f0f0f0" height=20 width=64>Zip</TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #f0f0f0; BORDER-LEFT: #f0f0f0; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-TOP: #f0f0f0; BORDER-RIGHT: #f0f0f0" width=64>Type</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20>78717</TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65>RESI</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20>78717</TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65>LAND</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20></TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65></TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20></TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65></TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20></TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65></TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20></TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65></TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65 height=20></TD><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; BORDER-TOP: windowtext; BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid" class=xl65></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

HOWEVER.. what I REALLY WANT TO DO is to is extract the zip code 78681 and others.

I have tried :
=ISNUMBER(FIND("78717,78681", A2))

But when I apply the Advanced Filter it does not work. Nothing comes up. Any assistance will be much appreciated!

HI

would you like a roundabout solution

insert a helpe column and give it a heading - say "condition"

in the rows of condition column give a formula =or(a2="value1",a2="value2"). (you can get values froma a cell reference in which case it becomes more dynamic)

this will give a "true" or False depending on the match

then do an advance filter with "true" as a condition

Hi & welcome to the Board!

Taking you example,

A1:C8 is your data table, including headers. Copy the header "Zip" and paste it in F1. From F2, downwards, put the zipcodes you require (in this example I used two codes, 78717 and 78681)

Now activate advance filter. In filter range choose your table (A1:C8). In criteria range choose F1:F3 (for this example). Select the option Copy to another location, and choose your required location and click OK (A12 in this example).

All records containing the Zip Codes 78717 and 78681 will be filtered to the new location.

Extend the ranges to your actual ranges.

Note that the headers should be distinct when compared to the regular data (for example bolded etc.)

**for this question A2 = 78717**

Hello, thank you for the reply.. I am attempting the =or formula. Could you show me an example of the formula if A2 could equal 78681 or 78717. For some reason I cannot get correct TRUE & FALSE statements.

I am using: =OR(A2="78681",A2="78717")

Even when using the cell reference as you suggest I am still getting a FALSE for everything even when it should be TRUE.

My example for cell reference: =OR(A2="H2",A2="H3")

*Where H2= 78681 and H3=78717

Thanks again!

Thank you Sandeep. Your solution works perfectly!! I do want to understand the =or formula as well though as it may give us some options we weren't aware of. Thank you

Sandeep, I used your solution as it is the most economical. Thanks again! Now is there a way to locate the advanced filter to refresh it so it does not have to be re-applied every time new data is introduced? OR is there a VB script that will work for this? Thanks

You could probably record a macro while doing the Advanced Filter, to get its code, and then assign it to a button/shortcut key and use that every time you have new data.

Post back if you face any problems.
