Trying to create cell from duplicate values.

Hi all

First time posting and hope we have an Excel guru.

I am trying to use a running list of names (below is dummy data), and then count the times the name appears:

Source
Name
John
Sally
John
Dave
Dave
John
Sally
Mick

Resulting in something like below in a new Spreadsheet page

Result
Name | Total
John | 3
Dave | 2
Sally | 2
Mick | 1

However it will be a running list, ie I will not know the names from the outset and as I add Gary to the Source tab would want it to create in the Result tab.

Is this possible, I have been trying variants of countif.

Would love some help as its getting pretty urgent at work that I get this done?

Use a pivot table - it will update as you add new names to the list.

That looks spot on but I am struggling to replicate. Do you have any links or guidance how to set up in Excel?

put "name" in A1
put a few names in A2 to A10
highlight A1 to A100
data, pivot table
confirm data is in excel
confirm data is highlighted
click on data layout
drag name (from options you see) in left (not top left) box
drag name into central box
ok
locate in same sheet (and highlight G10 to fix position0

note when you add more names you need to refresh the pivot table

Darn I hate that I am not better at this!

I get the amalgamated names but no Number beside:

Grand total

to the right of your list of unique names in the pivot table make sure it says "count of names"
