I saved a report to my desktop as a txt file. I need to open it with excel. I know I can open a blank excel book and open it, however, how can I right click the txt file on the desktop and open with excel? The only options are open with word pad/note pad etc. After browsing open with other programs Excel is not an option.

How to show all formulas in Excel?
Press Ctrl+` to show all formulas. Press it again to toggle back to numbers. The grave accent is often under the tilde on US keyboards.

It works for me. It sounds like maybe your computer is not recognizing it as a valid text file.
What kind of text file is it (fixed width, CSV, tab-delimited, etc)?
What is the exact extension on the file name?

Right click on the icon and select Open With. If Excel isn't listed, click the Browse button and find Excel.exe. On my computer it's in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12.
