Hi all

I have a workbook which I opened last night and saved as usual. Yhis morning when I tried to open the same workbook, I get a message saying the file is locked for editing, with the option of opening read only or notify when ready for access. Whichever option I choose, excel performs an illegal operation and closes down.

Any ideas on how to gain access to this important file would be much appreciated

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
colinharwood,

Perhaps a "silly" question but have You shut down Your computer and restart it?

Kind regards,
Dennis

Yes I have tried that, i have also copied the file to a new location, renamed it and tried to open it. This time it goes straight to "excel has performed an illegal operation" and closes down

colinharwood,

Does XL also crash when You open it and open another file or is it just this specific workbook that cause XL to crash?

Do You have access to Excel 2002?
If so You may open the file in this version (it has a good possibilty to recover damaged files).

Mail back with more information,

Kind regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis

Thanks for your time.

It is only this 1 file which causes xl to close

The error message says the "file is locked for editing"

No I dont have access to xl 2002

Any other ideas, as the offending file contains business details.

Cheers

Colin,

I still got some suggestions left :)

Delete all the temp-files (*.tmp) in the Temp-folder (the location vary depending on which windows-system You on.)

Are You running XL 97 on Windows XP?

Kind regards,
Dennis

If You start up Windows with a clean boot - Are You then able to delete all the temp-files?

Make a search and try to delete all tempfiles on the computer.

Kind regards,
Dennis

(Somehow I managed to post this to the wrong thread before, sorry about that.)

Hello Dave,

Hello Dennis (Have you finished converting Explode to Swedish yet?) ;-D

One thing I always try when dealing with something that "appears" to be a corrupted workbook is to try loading the workbook with Excel in Safe Mode.

I find that many files will open in Safe Mode, I can resave them in Safe Mode, and then they work fine when I try to open them again in my regular Excel.

To run Excel in safe mode, click the Windows Start button and select Run. Type the following: excel /s
Click OK. Then try loading your corrupt workbook. If it opens, save it as a different filename and then try opening it again in regular Excel mode.

If you can open it in safe mode but not regular Excel. You might want to try re-registering the Excel application in the Windows registry. You do this the same was as running Excel in Safe Mode only type this in the Run dialog instead: excel /regserver

Just keep in mind that re-registering Excel can wipe out your customized toolbar settings. If you don't want to spend time reconfiguring your toolbars you should find the "*.XLB" file that holds your customized toolbar settings and save it somewhere before re-registering the Excel app.

Good Luck!
