Unable to do any mathematical operations

Dear Fellows,

Good Day!

I have some data in excel which looks like a number but I remain unable to do any mathematical operation on them.

More interestingly the written numbers cannot be deleted once in editing mode( by pressing F2). I have tried to change its format and then convert it using Text to column, but failed.

Can anyone please guide me how to convert these values into numbers:

It appears you have an asterisk, "*", followed by numbers, then CHAR(63) in the last position. Try

=--(MID(A1,2,LEN(A1)-2))
