Excel gurus:

I have a situation which I cannot find an explanation for. Have any of you ever experienced this phenomena and / or do you have an idea how I can "cure" it?

I have a file which is resistant to running an Auto Open macro (I believe it may have some slight corruption - but it doesn't affect the report, it's a complex report, and I'm taking the "If it ain't broke don't fix approach for now - anyway, that's not the problem).

The reason I need it to run an Auto Open macro is that it's linked to another file, which I need open in order for it to work. I have found however, that if I open this file within the Auto Open of another file, I can open the linked file with no problem.

So I figured I'd use this knowledge to create a workaround: I'll just create a dummy file, with it's own Auto Open that opens my file, and then closes itself. No problem, right? Sort of.

If I open the dummy file directly (File / Open) this works perfectly - problem solved. But if I open it using an icon on a Portal file that I've created for my users, it opens the file just fine, but then "secretly" hides it immediately. By "secretly" I mean that the file is still open, but there's no evidence of that. It doesn't show up anywhere you would look to see what files you have open. The only way I know it's really open is that, if I try to open it again I get a message saying "This file is already open", and also, when I go to close Excel it asks me if I want to save that file.

Has anyone ever seen this before? Any idea how I show a "secretly" open file?

Thanks
