Im trying to open a database that I use at work that a lot of important daily reports are built off and I am getting the following message:

'The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time.'

I am getting this straight after trying to open the file, if I click okay I am left with a session of access runnning with no open database, and click help does nothing at all.

I urgently need to get this resolved. Any solutions.

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
Hi

It sounds like your database has become corrupted. Have a read of this article :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182867/EN-US/

Before you do anything, make a copy of the database.

Check there is no-one else using the database and try compacting and repairing the database. This probably won't succeed but it is still worth trying.

If that fails, see if there is an identically named file in the same directory with the 'ldb' extention (rather than the 'mdb' extension). If there is no-one else using the database delete the 'ldb' file and try to open the database again.

If that fails, read the article above - it contains a link to a 'jetcomp' utility - download and run that utility. (see here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172733/EN-US/)

If that also fails, there are a number of online service providers who can help restore corrupt databases, Google turned up this one for example :
http://www.accessdatabaserepair.com/

HTH, Andrew

P.S. have you tried creating a new database and importing the tables etc out of the old database?

With Access closed, check in the folder that holds the database and see whether there is a .ldb file with the same name as the database (which will have a .mdb extension).

If so, delete this file and try opening your database again. Explanation: Every time you open your database, Access creates a .ldb to track who is in the database. If Access crashes or there is a network problem, the .ldb is left behind instead of being deleted).

Thank you.

Tried the above, but with no success. There is no ldb file, and the other methods just return the same or similar error messages.

OK, it sounds like you do have corruption issues.

Here are 2 MS links with some background:
Access 97 -- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279334/EN-US/
Access 2000 -- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/209137/EN-US/

One option is to import all objects into a new, blank database.
1. Create a blank database
2. File > Get External Data > Import
Select all tables, then OK
Repeat in turn for queries, forms, reports, macros, modules
At some stage your import will fail -- note the name of the object, that is the source of the corruption. Continue wit the remaining objects in the DB. Unless you are very unlucky, there won't be more than one corrupt object.
3. If you created any custom menus and toolbars, click the Options on the import dialog and import them too.

Now that you have a DB without the corrupt object(s), restore these from a recent backup. If you don't have a recent backup you will need to rebuild them, or invest in a database recorvery service.

For future reference, it is a good idea to regularly compact and repair the database (Tools > Database Utilities > Compact and Repair). It keeps everything running smoothly and reduces the chances of corruption.
