I am using an Index formula with two embedded match formulas for the row and column lookups. The index formula works in some cases, and is giving a #REF! error in others. Can anyone offer a suggestion? Thanks

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"

You formula and a few details would be helpful.
I'd guess you are looking outside your range, for example, seeking row 5 of 3C by 3R area would result in a ref error
