Use of SUMIF Function to get total from different column

Howdy,

Here is what I am trying to do:

Have multiple columns and multiple rows of data in spreadsheet.
I want to first select ONLY those records with a specific value (lets say value is YES)from column D (Cells contain either Yes or No). I then (ONLY FOR THOSE selected records) want to get the total from column X (Hours worked) for the records selected from Column D.

ANy thoughts on how to do this?

Something like this perhaps.

=SUMIF(D1:D10,"Yes",X1:X10)

If I understnd you correctly, you're already there--you know you need to use SUMIF in an empty cell on the same sheet as the data as follows:

=SUMIF(D:D,"Yes",X:X)
