using match in a 2 dimensioal table

I want to look in a huge table of data (approx 100 columns by 2000 rows) for a 5 digit number and return the text in the cell 2 above it.

Is it possible to use the MATCH function on a table rather than a list (andd therefore get a 2d reference returned).

Am I barking up the wrong tree and need something different?

Could you post a scaled down sample along with the desired results?

Assuming the number is unique in the table,

=INDEX(tbl, SUMPRODUCT((tbl=12345) * ROW(tbl)) - ROW(tbl) - 1, SUMPRODUCT((tbl=12345) * COLUMN(tbl)) - COLUMN(tbl) + 1)

Replace tbl with the address of the table, and 12345 with the number sought.

unfortunately it's not although it doesnt' matter if only the first is returned.

I have to say, this seems like one of those simple things you think there would be a function for!

This MUST be confirmed with Ctrl+Shift+Enter rather than just Enter:

=INDEX(tbl, MIN(IF(tbl=12345, ROW(tbl))) - ROW(tbl) - 1, MIN(IF(tbl=12345, COLUMN(tbl))) - COLUMN(tbl) + 1)

E1 houses a value like 33333 and the data occupies A1:C4.

E2, control+shift+enter, not just enter:

perfect - thanks guys. one day I hope to be able to work out whats going on here but its a bit beyond me at the mo!
