Using mySQL ODBC to improve spreadsheet size/performance?

Hello everyone,

The current spreadsheed used is quite large (40MB) and contains lots of formulas resulting in poor calculation performance.

I thought it might be best if some of the data (which are used for calculations and currently put into using copy-n-paste) are stored in a MySQL database which will be connected with Excel using ODBC.

1) Will this step result in a performance gain concerning calculations?
2) Will the current size of the spreadsheet be reduced?

Thank you for your time and help :)
BTW: I am using Excel 2003.

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
I have a sheet set up in excel 2003 via an ODBC lunk with a number of calculations, depandant on what part of the end product you are looking for I experience no difference in speed.

So to combat this I have many sheets set up pulling in definded areas of data to produce bespoke reports - this does cut down the size and increase perfomance.

Note If you set the ODBC "Automatic Refresh" up this will slow any automated calculations.

The above is my experience.
