Using pivot table values in a separate chart

I've googled this, and can't get a concrete answer....
I've created a pivot table showing several items by month. Each month is able to drill down to 2 or 3 sub levels. When fully expanded, the pivot table would occupy many rows.

I need to extract cell data from this expanded pivot table and plot them on a chart elsewhere in my excel sheet.

Problem is, as soon as the pivot table is collapsed, then of course the cells used in the separate chart no longer show the data.

I assume I could just leave the pivot table full expanded, and then the cells would remain visible. Is there another way?

I hope I was clear.
Thx in advance.
