Using Sort() method from external VB app

I know how to configure the Sort method from within a worksheet macro, as in:

Range("A1").Select
Selection.sort Key1:=Range("A1"), Order1:=xlAscending, Header:=xlGuess, _
OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom

But when I try to translate this for use from within a VB external application that creates and populates Excel I can't get it to work:

workbook.activesheet.Range("A1").Select
workbook.activesheet.selection.Sort Key1 = workbook.activesheet.Range("A1"), Order1 = 1, _
Header = 0, OrderCustom = 1, MatchCase = False, Orientation = 1
