let say you have
=VLOOKUP(A6,Sheet2!$A$1:$B$10,2,0)
but you want to change the table you are looking up from.
if you use
=VLOOKUP(A6,INDIRECT(A1&"!$A$1:$B$10"),2,0)
and A1 contains the value "sheet2", it will look to sheet 2. Change the value in A1 to sheet3, it will look to sheet 3. If you use indirect to reference another workbook, the workbook must be open. You can use validation on A1 as you say to limit the choices to valid ones.
