Hello all,

I am not new to Excel. However, I have trouble creating V Lookup's. What is the best way to go about learning to creating a V Lookup?

Excel Facts

Show numbers in thousands?
Use a custom number format of #,##0,K. Each comma after the final 0 will divide the displayed number by another thousand
Take a quick look at this table.

When one enters a number in D3 an item from Column 3 in the table appears in E3
If the 3 in in the formula is changed to a2, then an item from Col 2 will appear.

What the formula is saying: that find in the column of the range the corresponding item to the number found in D3.

Does that help you understand Vlookups, or do you need more guidance?

Use the Insert function feature and select vlookup. It will bring up a window.

The lookup value is what you want to look up. It has to be in column A in the workbook you are using the formula in. So if you put the formula in row 3 it would have to be A3.

Table array is the workbook you want it to search in. Select all or just a portion. Then in Col_index_num you put the column you want the data to be pulled from.

So lets say that you want to find the data from A3 on the start workbook in workbook B and the data you want to reference is column d you would put the number of the column which is 4 E=5 f=6 etc.

Range_lookup is typically "false" for 99% of the vlookups I do.
