Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
You can do this with a formula. If your data is in columns A:D starting in row 2 enter this formula in cell E2:

=COUNTIF(D$2:D2,D2)

and copy down.

If you read the Excel's help, they tel you that offset returns a reference to a range, but when you used it you will not get a reference but the containt of the cell-as indirect function-.I have even tried the example from help and nothing new

I agree that the help is a bit confusing.

OFFSET returns a reference but the reference is evaluated. Just like the formula:

=A1

contains a reference which is evaluated.

Excel wouldn't be much use if it didn't evaluate references would it?
