place a formula in column G (of same row) that is the sum of the last populated cells in column D,E and F

Remove leading & trailing spaces
Save as CSV to remove all leading and trailing spaces. It is faster than using TRIM().
Code:
[COLOR="Blue"]Sub[/COLOR] TheLastRow()
    [COLOR="Blue"]Dim[/COLOR] lastRow [COLOR="Blue"]As[/COLOR] [COLOR="Blue"]Long[/COLOR]
    lastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, "D").End(xlUp).Row
    Range("G" & lastRow).Formula = "=SUM(D" & lastRow & ":F" & lastRow & ")"
[COLOR="Blue"]End[/COLOR] [COLOR="Blue"]Sub[/COLOR]

Try

Code:
Sub Fmla()
Dim LR As Long
LR = Range("D" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
Range("G" & LR).Formula = "=SUM(D" & LR & ":F" & LR & ")"
End Sub
