Hi,

I have a list of football teams from two different websites, and I want to match each team up with the it's team from the other website. I would normally use a VLOOKUP, but as the the teams are not identical that would not work. If I use the 'TRUE' option in the range lookup for VLOOKUP this does not work either, any suggestions please?

Thanks

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
If the first 3 letters of the each team names are unique then you can use =INDEX($D$2:$D$6,MATCH(LEFT(A2,3),LEFT($D$2:$D$6,3),0)) You need to enter the formula with Control-Shift-Enter. You should see curly brackets around the formula like this {=INDEX($D$2:$D$6,MATCH(LEFT(A2,3),LEFT($D$2:$D$6,3),0))} in the formula bar you can not enter the brackets. A2 would be the team in the first list you are looking for and D2:D6 would the second list. copy down

This returns #VALUE.

Does your example apply to when the initial table is in columns A and B?

did you enter the formula with Control-Shift Enter? Press and hold the Control and Shift keys then press enter. Since this is and array formula it cannot be entered just by hitting the enter key or you will get a value error.

You can change the references to what ever is need for where your lists are. =INDEX($B$2:$B$7,MATCH(LEFT(A2,3),LEFT($B$2:$B$7,3),0)) for second list in Column B
