Hi everyone

First time user, long time follower!!!

I am trying to ascertain if it is possible to have a VLOOKUP function which looks at a different spreadsheet to get the values i need.

Basically, what i am trying to build is a staffing roster which uses names from a staff listing database so that when you type in their name, a VLOOKUP function will find their staff ID number.

I then use this spreadsheet as a mail merge database to produce the staff time sheets which includes their names and staff id number.

Any ideas if this is possible and how I would go about doing that?

Thanks in anticipation!!!

Graeme

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
Welcome!

Have you any experience or knowledge of using VLookup?

If we are thinking in same direction then this is easy.

Open both the books and then apply Vlookup function we do across the sheets.

It does not work if files are password protected[both which doesnt allow read only].

Try something like...

=VLOOKUP(StaffName,[Book1.xls]Sheet1!$A$2:$B$100,2,0)

where names are in column A and ID's in column B. If the reverse situation holds:

=INDEX([Book1.xls]Sheet1!$B$2:$B$100,MATCH(StaffName,[Book1.xls]Sheet1!$A$2:$A$100,0))

I have very little experience with using VLOOKUP hence why I'm asking for help :)

I've read the help menus but sometimes people know little tricks that they don't tell you so that's why I've posted :)
