I am trying to extract information from a Master sheet using this function but in some cases I need it to look into Column A but in other instances I need it to look in column D.
When I've been reading about this it looks as if it will only work when I'm searching Column A.
If that is the case, would there be another function that would get do the same job?
The Master sheet has 30 or so columns with different information in them - each row is specific to one product. In Column A I have the Code number for the product and in Column D, I have the bar code number for the product. In a different sheet I need to extract information about the product using the code number but also at times I need to use the barcode number.
I would be grateful of any assistance.

The match is always in the first column of the range that you define.....but there's no reason why that can't be column D, e.g. if you have a barcode in Z2 you can use this formula

=VLOOKUP(Z2,D2:E100,2,0)

to look up Z2 in column D and return a value from column E

If you want to look up the barcode in D and return a value from a column to the left (e.g. column B) then you can use INDEX/MATCH, i.e.

-INDEX(B2:B100,MATCH(Z2,D2:D100,0))
