Vlookup number vs. text

I have two sheets, both reports which I receive daily. In the first report, a group of numbers is formatted as "general", while in the second, the numbers are formatted as "text".

I am trying to do a vlookup between the smaller group formatted as general to the list that is formatted as text, and it won't work.

If I highlight the column, reformat as text, then click each cell, hit F2, then hit Enter, Excel does some type of "okay, I'll refresh this as text" thing, and then the vlookup pulls.

I'm building this into a macro that I'm going to run daily on like...... 4000 lines of data, so this is not a practical solution.

I've tried pre-formatting the row as "text", then copying it into a new sheet, then doing the vlookup, but nothing works.......

What does hitting F2, then hitting Enter, do exactly?

Any ideas how I fix this?

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
1) go to data tab
2) Select the column with Text and choose text to columns from the data ribbon And choose the pertinent format for this column.
hope it help
