I used the formula: (#N/A)<TABLE style="WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=64 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD class=xl66 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 15pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=64 height=20>VLOOKUP(C2,[test1.xls]Sheet1!$1:$65536,2,TRUE)</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The result is coming but the problem is it is not coming the exact result as you can see in the above examples. Please note that test.xls is the reference file and test1.xls is the lookup file.

How can the problem be fixed. Want a solution.

Lookup table is in [Test1.xls]Sheet1!$A$1:$B$16 edit range as required
return information from column 2
exact match required therefore 0 or False

Formula =VLOOKUP(C2,[Test1.xls]Sheet1!$A$1:$B$16,2,0)

Thank you for your reply Mr. Dave. But the lookup value is not in column C, it is in column B. And the whole description is in column A. So we can't perform the exact match..... we should look for the appropriate match. I am getting the result but it is coming one row shifted below....

I do not follow your information.

VLOOKUP(C2,[Test1.xls]Sheet1!$A$1:$B$16,2,0)

c2 (edit as required) is the information that you want to look up

the formula looks in the first column of the lookup table which you indicated is Column A
The 2 in the formula says give information from 2nd column of columns specified
The 0 or False
means exact match is required.

Do you not require an exact match?
Is your data sorted?

That was mistake.... actually that should be B2. Can u please go through all the information I provided.

Let me clear you the issue.

just have a look at the two excel sheets I provided.....

As u can see the result in test.xls, the result coming in second row should come in the first row and so on. I tried the False option also... but it is coming #N/A in all.

So is there any other solution?

I need the exact match(but length of lookup value is shorter than the reference value. eg: I am looking for <b>BC-CH-10366</b>, it should return me the value of <b>BC-CH-10366 FIFA SPORTS BAG</b>.

Is their any relation with data sorting?
