vlookup - return value from merged cell

I am doing a vlookup with the following:

A1 = Mr X
A2 = Mr Y

C1:C2 is a merged cell with "yellow"

Vlookup for Mr X = yellow, however
vlookup for Mr Y is blank (should be yellow also)

What can I do for Mr Y to also return yellow without unmerging C1:C2

Please help.
