I'm using the MS Web Services Reference tool to connect to a web service that is described by a WDSL file. I then use MS Web Services to create the necessary classes to connect to the web service.

When I compile the classes it generates I get a syntax error message (expected identifier) on the statement...

Public type As String

..seems pretty harmless, but I get the same error when I put this in a new function on its own. There is obviously something fundamentally wrong with this statement, but I can't see what it is.

When did Power Query debut in Excel?
Although it was an add-in in Excel 2010 & Excel 2013, Power Query became a part of Excel in 2016, in Data, Get & Transform Data.
Type is a keyword in VBA (for declaring your own Types) so use another variable name (eg strType).
