Weekday function question

Can somebody please explain why the following command returns 3

=WEEKDAY("1/1")

Because you didn't specify a year, so it assumes the current year 2013
January 1st 2013 is a Tuesday

The weekday function works on a Sunday - Saturday week by default.
Sunday = 1
Monday = 2
Tuesday = 3

Just the fact that you asked the question indicates that you expected a different result..
What result did you expect that function to return, and why?

Note, I'm not saying anything bad here, just trying to help.
Perhaps the weekday function is not the correct function for what you're trying to do.

What does the "1/1" mean. Thats the only confusing part. I saw this on another web page did not find an answer so the best place to come for an answer is Mr Excell.

It is shortform for writing 1st of January of the current System year (ie 1/1/2013)
