Weird cell behavior

In Excel 2007, I occasionally get a cell where if I type something like =a2+a3
I get that exact string showing. It is not being treated as a formula. if I copy it to other cells, it is exactly the same, no adjustment of relative cell references. i do not have cell formulas turned on.

is this some sort of cell format? i could find no reference to it.

The only way I have been able to work around it is to delete the colums and insert new ones which seem to work.

thanks
Fred

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
That will occur with cells formatted as Text. Try formatting as General and re-entering the formulas.
