what causes an excel file to increase in file size

I have an excel file is only one page only.
The file size is 5 megs is there a way to look at the excel file to see why the file so big.

Yes, press Control End while in the worksheet, you should be taken to what Excel considers to be the "last used" cell of that. Chances are that it's very far away from the "real" last used cell. So, you should delete (Not clear contents) all the unused rows and columns, and then, save again.
