What does the "#" do in a hyperlink formula?

Hi All,

In tab "Summary" of one of my workbooks, I have a formula : =HYPERLINK("#"&"Case1!A1","CASE1")
This formula is in cell A3.
When i click on A3, I can navigate to sheet "Case1".
I am not able to recollect what does the # part of the formula do?
Can anyone tell me what it does?

Other formula's don't require # just sheet reference is enough
