whats wrong with this statement

COMPAREVALUE1 = startmonth + " " + Year(startdate)

Excel Facts

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
Try replacing the + with & -- assuming startmonth is a string.

+ will work as the catenation operator, but only with strings, and Year returns a number.

Or COMPAREVALUE = Format(startdate, "mmm yyyy")

Thanks

using this statement

COMPAREVALUE1 = startmonth & " " & Year(startdate)

gives me a value of MAY 2010, I need to adjust this statement to give me a end result of MAY 10
