Why can't I shade a cell when the sheet is protected?

I have a cell that I need users to either type into or set the shade. Because of this the cell is not Locked or Hidden. When I protect the sheet it allows text to be entered but not the cell shading to be changed? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Guessing it is something to do with the protection element

Have you read the help file?

Yes I've checked the help files but unfortunately to no avail. There must be some way of being able to shade cells when a sheet is protected???

It seems to be that when you protect the sheet if you select "Contents" then it doesn't allow you to shade any cells, even those that aren't locked!!!

This seems crazy, I'm hoping someone is aware of a workaround...please!
