Why does Data Validation List have no list tab???

Hi there everybody
I have a recurring problem with using a list in data validation. The "in cell dropdown" box is selected but the validated cell will not produce a tab at the side of the cell to open the list. Occasionally, if produced, it will disappear at a later time. Calculation is set to automatic, there is no protection or restriction on the worksheet.
Anybody got any clues how I can cure this???
thanks in advance
Derek

first thought - for cells once setup with data validation, if someone copies / drags a value into the cell, the validation is destroyed. when there's no drop down, is the validation still in effect?

Thanks for the quick response Paddy. No its not a case of pasting in the cell and yes the data is still restricted, but no list tab. I have open new workbooks and tried it and still no list tab yet the validation restriction is in place. Maybe a glitch, perhaps I should reboot?
