I connected my laptop to a high res 4k 42 inch monitor. Beautiful... and slow.

Scrolling, updating, everything is slower.

Is there a secret setting to adjust the response?

Save Often
If you start asking yourself if now is a good time to save your Excel workbook, the answer is Yes
Not sure if it will help, but under options, Advanced, In the "Display" section check "Disable hardware graphics acceleration"

I think you will also find the refresh rate of the Hi-Res 4K Monitor is testing your graphics chip.

Generally, on-board graphics chips cope okay within it's notebook environment. The chips CUDA Cores will be just enough to do the job, especially in budget models.

Essentially, if you have a hamster treading a wheel, it will struggle to keep up with the Graphic Processing demand required to continually refresh the amount of data to drive the pixels on huge displays and will make scrolling or movement choppy and slow.

A lot of On-Board chips generally rely on both GPU RAM & supplement any shortfalls by accessing the DRAMM to maintain stability.
