Is there a way using VBA Workbook_Open() to set workbook calculations to automatic if the user does not have automatic calculations turned on?

Yes.

Put this in your code at the start
Code:
Application.Calculation = xlcalculationmanual

If you want VBA to turn it back on:
Code:
Application.Calculation = xlCalculationAutomaic
