Worksheet won't save

Hi guys, I recently moved My Documents to a new partition and everything went smoothly.
Not sure if this is related, but since then I cannot save files in Excel. I get this error:

The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following:

Make sure the specified folder exists
make sure the folder that contains the file is not read-only
make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters : <>[]:| or *
Make sure the file/path name doesn’t contain more than 216 characters

Obviously I've obeyed all these rules. I can save files without problem in other apps. It's just Excel that's the problem. I've tried other extensions but still no go.

Anyone able to share some advice to get around this problem?

Jo,

Have you checked in Tools > Options and updated the default location for saving files?

If My Documents was in C: and you have moved it to H:, Excel may spit the dummy when it can't find C:\My Documents

Hi Denis, thanks for your reply. The default save directory is correct. Does it matter what the default directory for auto-backup is? This is set to c:/docs and settings.

Also, I've just noticed that I can save previous files - just not newly-created ones.

If your new folder is buried down multiple levels, that could be your issue.
Apparently, Excel will not create a file whose total path and file length exceeds 218 characters.

You can get around that with some help from the IT guys: get them to map the folder with the long path to a new drive letter. So, D:\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\Folder4\somefile.xls, if Folder4 is given its own drive letter, becomes J:\somefile.xls

Sorted this out - the problem was a [ symbol in my new D/My Docs directory name.
