Wrong dates in scatter chart

When I make a scatter chart of a column of dates versus a column of data values, the X axis doesn't show the actual dates. Instead, it shows 00-Jan-00, 02-Jan-00, etc.
However, if I make a column chart, the correct dates are displayed.
How can I fix this?

Excel Facts

Move date out one month or year
Use =EDATE(A2,1) for one month later. Use EDATE(A2,12) for one year later.
The only way I can reproduce that behaviour is by having the dates as text entries rather than serial dates.

The original data was imported from a 3rd party website.
The date column was reformatted as a date, but that gives the same result...

Let me give a clearer problem description.
You are right that the date column is being treated as text. But no matter what I do to reformat the cells to the date format, it keeps reverting back to text.

make sure the text at least looks like a date, and that the range is formatted as something numerical (not text). Then copy a blank cell, select the range of text dates, and from the Edit menu, use Paste Special, Values, Operation - Add.
