XLAM password for 2007 does not open in 2011 for Mac

We are evaluating Office 2011 for Mac. I have an XLAM file which requires a password to open. It opens with that password in Excel 2007 (on a PC). The same password is rejected when I try to open a copy of the XLAM file in Office 2011 for Mac. (Yes, I did check CAPS LOCK.) The response is "Project Locked Invalid password".

Any clues as to why this is so and what I can do about it?

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
Have you tried unlocking the xlam on Windows, then opening in 2011 and reinstating the password? I have seen a post elsewhere where that allowed the add-in to then work on both versions (though I still don't know the underlying cause).

I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this. Once I unlocked the XLAM in Excel 2007, I was able to open it in Excel 2011.

Of course, I should not have to do this for all my old VBAProjects but there you are.

Thanks for your prompt accurate reply.
