I have written macros in a very large (15 sheets) workbook. I had it saved as an .xlsm file; but, in that format, it is huge. So, I read that converting to .xls format could make it smaller.

I did this, and now when I open it, the progress bar at the bottom that says "Opening" reaches completion, but the graphics never load; and Excel freezes.

What can I do to balance file size and functionality here?

I don't know if this is going to help you or not.

I have a workbook in .xls format that has 150 worksheets and a size of 40MB.

As a test, I just saved it as .xlsm. It reduced the size to 14MB, but it does open slower than the .xls.
I guess that is why I keep it in .xls format.

I also have 2GB of memory.

You mention graphics. How large is your workbook. (MB)

If somebody has an answer to these issues, I am also curious.
