Hello group,

Does anybody know why an *.xlsm file can be opened from desktop but not from a network server. So far, this only happens on one computer that is using Office 365 (desktop not web). When it tries to open the file, it says:
"Excel cannot be open the file 'filename.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid"

The other computer using the same Office 365 doesn't encounter such problem.

Does anyone has the same experience or would be the problem?

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Best,

Excel Facts

Whats the difference between CONCAT and CONCATENATE?
The newer CONCAT function can reference a range of cells. =CONCATENATE(A1,A2,A3,A4,A5) becomes =CONCAT(A1:A5)
Just a shot in the dark. On the computer on which it is not working, if you navigate to the file in Windows Explorer does the file show the Excel icon for the file ?
And/Or if you right click on the file is the first option show the Excel icon next to the first Open option ?

Dear Alex,

Yes, when I right click on the file, the first option show Excel icon next to the first Open option.
Just in case if this information helps - I can open any other Excel file (xls./xlsx.) without problem, except *.xlsm. Macro has been enabled too.

Thanks!

If it only happens on the one computer, is the same user login into that computer (as on a computer that can open it) ?

Update: We found that the xlsm file won't open because of the McAfee Antivirus permission setting preventing it from opening macro file. Once the antivirus is disabled, the xlsm file can be opened. Thank you for all the responses.
