I need a formula that will select a letter in a column of multiple letters, assign a value of 1 and then total those letters in that column.
Example column c, count all the y's, but ignore the n's and x's

I've been searching other people's questions, but everyone else seems to be asking more complicated questions...

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.

Hi

perhaps:

=COUNTIF(C:C,"Y")

which will count all cells in column C containing only either a "Y" or a "y".

What do you actually have in your cells? You do not have any cells with just a Y or a y in them.

I have the "questions" in c2, "returning?" in c3, "?" in c4, "y" in c5, blank in c6 thru c10, "n" in c11, "y" in c12 through c15. I was expecting a total of 6

Are you sure the actual value in the cells is "y" - check in the formula bar at the top of Excel. If it is "y " or " y" (note trailing/leading space) this isn't the same as "y". If the values are the result of a formula, then please post the formula.

formula bar shows y (no quotation marks)

as i'm doing phone interview on my volunteers, I'm typing in a cell y for yes, n for no and ? if they are unsure about continuing as a volunteer. I am hoping to add up all the y (yes answers) in c 75, n (no answers) in c77. The senario I sent is a sample of responses I've collected so far. I put quotations around my previous response intending to communicate what is in the cell. sorry if that created confusion.

I just tried to narrow the range of the count, and it worked. Thank-you for getting me on the right track.
