Hi All -

I was told that if you have a file open for beyond the autosave timeframe that Excel will save that file back to its original file location. I don't think that's right. Doesn't Excel save the file to a temporary location and you could eventually close the file without saving and the original file stays the same?

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
Hello Amy,

You are correct. Excel opens a copy of the original file for editing in the same folder as the original. This file's name starts with a tilde character (~). This copy only replaces the original when you Save the changes you have made to the copy. After you close the workbook and you have chosen to save changes or not then the copy is destroyed.

Hello Amy,

The copy remains open as long as the original workbook is open. If you close the original workbook then the copy is destroyed.

In the event Excel crashes or is closed improperly, Excel will create a backup copy of the last auto-saved workbook or workbooks if more than one was open. When Excel is restarted, you will be shown a list of the files and asked if you want to keep them or not.
