Linked Excel Files not "holding" links

I have a master file that three other team members link their data into. We have been noticing that sometimes a link does not hold. The Master File and Team Member file is either linked by opening both files or the same time or by opening the Master File and hitting Data/Edit Links and selecting the file that we want to link and clicking on Update Values. Because the Master File is not "holding" the link (revised data), we are having accuracy issues.

There are about 40 files that link into the Master File but did no think that would be an issue.

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
Do all users that open the Master File have folder access to the location of all 40 files?

It may not be an issue, but are all users using a mapped drive as opposed to UNC path references and would all users be mapped to the same folder location?

It is possible that some is breaking the link. If you go to Edit Links on the Data tab. You will see the option to Break Link. This will put the current value into the cell and it will no longer update since it is not linked.

Another possibility is someone did a copy paste as values.
