Extracting the month as text from a date

I have a large spreadsheet of which two of the columns are :

Date Payable Month
22-Sep-16 Sep
27-Mar-17 Mar
22-Sep-17 Sep
07-Oct-16 Oct

<colgroup><col><col></colgroup><tbody>
</tbody>

The dates are in number format in col 1

In col 2 I would like the text value of the month shown in the cell in col 1

I will be grateful for some help please

If the date is a Excel date then in column 2 put =A2 , where A2 has the date. Then format column 2 to say the month. In format cells go to custom and enter mmm
