Just discovered a very major issue after 2 days worth of working...
My issue similar to this thread:

When I paste a linked picture, any drowpdown list arrows in my workbook gets corrupted - when I choose a drop down cell the arrow flashes then disappears.
For some reason linked picture paste triggers this bug.
I have moved my work to another workbook etc. Checked all objects/names etc.
Saved as different versions...
Still no solution.
Any help appreciated.
