Add 2 different columns that has data to get quantity

Trying to find a formula to add two different types of widgets. The two widgets are in separate columns. When the two widgets are combined, they form a single part count as 1 item. I hope that this makes sense.

Having problems, there is no number in the columns only text. Widget 1 column A is added to Widget z column B will get you a quantity of new part as 1. The totals of the new parts are added later as total parts ordered.

Countifs can tell you how many there are appearing together, sumifs can add just the numbers whose adjacent values match 1 and z for instance.
